Mahalia Jackson’s powerful rendition of Leaning on the Everlasting Arms stands as one of the most definitive recordings of this classic gospel hymn. Known globally as the “Queen of Gospel,”
Jackson adapted her deep, emotionally resonant blues style to traditional church hymns, bringing immense comfort and depth to the track. Her version can be found across several compilations, including The Forgotten Recordings.

The new permanent installation foregrounds the creativity of artists across the subcontinent and enduring, dynamic historical traditions. The Met’s Arts of Africa galleries returned in May 2025, in a reimagined Michael C. Rockefeller Wing. Following a multiyear renovation, the reenvisioned installation reintroduces visitors to the Museum’s collection of sub-Saharan African art through a selection of some 500 works organized to survey major artistic movements and living traditions from across the subcontinent. The new galleries present original creations from the Middle Ages to the present, and one-fourth of the works are on display at the Museum for the first time.

Ten of Paul Taylor’s dances lay the foundation to the bold three-week Season, including dances not seen at the Koch Theater at Lincoln Center in over ten years: ARABESQUE, …BYZANTIUM, SPINDRIFT, and 3 EPITAPHS; with World premieres by Resident Choreographers Lauren Lovette and Robert Battle, and a New York premiere by celebrated choreographer Pam Tanowitz. Rounding out the Season are the Company premieres of Robert Battle’s compelling work, NO LONGER SILENT, which The New York Times hailed as, “… arguably Mr. Battle’s strongest piece…,” and the eagerly anticipated revival of dance icon Alwin Nikolais’ visually stunning TENSILE INVOLVEMENT.
The Season features live music performed by Orchestra of St. Luke’s, under the baton of Music Director David LaMarche.
