Sanford, a widower and junk dealer living at 9114 S. Central Avenue in the Watts neighborhood of South Central Los Angeles, California. Demond Wilson played his son Lamont Sanford.

Ugly Wanda, played by Foxx, was based on a character LaWanda Page played in a sketch on Redd Foxx (1977).
