11/4/25 O&A NYC DANCE BY WALTER RUTLEDGE: Paul Taylor Dance Company Sneak Preview

The Paul Taylor Dance Company opened its New York City season tonight in State Theater at Lincoln Center. I very really can just watch a performance without a critical eye. This evening the Taylor Company indulged me with a ticket to tonight’s performance. Review(s) will follow, but it would be remiss of me not to give you a sneak preview of the Taylor season.

Concertina was an appropriate way to herald in the seventy first season. The work culminated with an audience friendly, and extremely satisfying living “family portrait” tableau. How Love Sounds by Hope Boykin utilized an eclectic score ranging the romantic era to 70’s disco, which took us on a joyous music and movement adventure. The work received a curtain call cleverly built into the well-crafted choreography.

Cascade concluded the evening. For modern dance enthusiasts Bach and Taylor are as synonymous as peanut butter and jelly. Live music has become a luxury for dance. The Taylor Company continues to offer live music, and The Orchestra of St. Luke’s (David LaMarche conductor) helped give the performance that extra Taylor panache.

Shout out to Patrick Gamble. Congratulation on your augural New York City season. You are off to a great start!

The season runs through November 23. The season will present a total of eighteen works including the New York premiere by Boykin, two world premieres by Taylor Company resident choreographers Lauren Lovett and Robert Battle and of course a bevy of Taylor classics.
