In Monotones II Frederick Ashton distilled the exquisite tranquility of Erik Satie’s Trois Gymnopédies. Ashton displayed some of his most modernist choreography danced by the Royal Ballet. Monotones II was created first and given its premiere at the Royal Opera House on March 24, 1965 with Vyvyan Lorraine, Anthony Dowell, and Robert Mead. Satie’s delicate music, coupled with Ashton’s beautiful choreography, is wonderfully haunting.

Vogue by Madonna was inspired by vogue dancers and choreographers Jose Gutierez Xtravaganza and Luis Xtravaganza from the House/Ball community. They introduced Vogueing to her at the Sound Factory club in New York City.  Vogue is from her second soundtrack album I’m Breathless (1990).  Continue reading

Creative Outlet Dance Theatre of Brooklyn presented a three-day performance series May 15th through 17th at Kumble Performance Center, LIU Downtown Brooklyn Campus. The event entitled, An Artist Grows In Brooklyn, marked the organization’s twentieth anniversary and featured present company members, returning alumnus, faculty and students from the school. The performance consisted of a series of eight vignettes, which encapsulated the company’s past, present and future legacy. Continue reading
