Rakim Mayers better known by his stage name, ASAP Rocky (stylized as A$AP Rocky), is a 26-year-old rapper from Harlem, New York City. He is a member of the hip hop collective ASAP Mob, from which he adopted his moniker. Rocky released his debut mixtape Live, Love, ASAP, in 2011 to critical acclaim. The success of his mixtape led to a record deal with Polo Grounds Music, RCA Records, and Sony Music  Entertainment. He recorded his 2013 debut album Long, Live, ASAP, which also well received by critics and debuted at number one on the Billboard 200.

In 2008 Robin Williams performed at the Wimbledon Theatre. It was a charity performance in support of Prince Charles’ organization, The Prince’s Trust. Recently Prince Charles became the first British royal to publicly pay tribute Williams, after the late actor’s death. In a statement to Press Association Charles said, “I greatly enjoyed meeting him on several occasions and his irreplaceable contribution to life will be greatly missed by countless people, including myself.” He added: “He was a remarkable man, whose wonderful frenetic humour brought a special kind of laughter into people’s lives.”

In time for the US Open, Nike presents a very interesting hybrid. Fusing two Tinker Hatfield designs, the Nike Zoom Vapor Tour 9 meets the Air Jordan 3. Maybe one of the most unexpected mash-ups, the out coming sneaker blends signature design elements of the respective models which include the red Jumpman logo on the tongue, Roger Federer’s emblem on the midsole, and the classic Nike Air on the heels. The sneaker will release today; Tuesday, August 26, at Flight 23.

9/25/14- O&A Hollywood Monday: Miss Sophia – The Color Purple

Oprah Winfrey portrayed Sofia in the 1985 movie version of Alice Walkers novel The Color Purple. The role was Winfrey’s first venture into film and for many remains her most recognizable role. Winfrey was the high-spirited and independent Sophia who marries Albert’s (Danny Glovers) son Harpo (Willard E. Pugh). Sofia has suffered abuse from the men in her family, but unlike Celie (Whoopie Goldberg), she refuses to tolerate it. This high-spiritedness proves to be her downfall, as a rude remark to the town mayor’s wife and a retaliatory punch to the mayor himself ends with Sofia beaten and jailed. Continue reading

Mahalia Jackson, The Queen of Gospel, became one of the most influential gospel singers in the world. She became an internationally acclaimed singer and civil rights activist. Fred Benjamin Memorial Planned for Saturday, August 23, 2014

There will be a memorial service for dancer, choreographer and teacher Fred Benjamin on Saturday, August 23rd; 6:30pm at Saint Peters Church, 619 Lexington Avenue at the corner of 53rd Street. Friends, colleagues, former students and company members will speak including Gina Ellis, Marilyn Banks and Mercedes Ellington. The memorial will not present Benjamin’s choreograph through live performance, instead film and photos will be presented. Prior to the start of the service there will be a wine toast to Benjamin, who died of organ failure on December 14, 2013 in Manhattan.
