Duet from Concerto Six Twenty-Two is set to Concerto in A for Clarinet and Orchestra, K. 622 by  Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Choreographer Lar Lubovitch premiered this work on his company, the Lar Lubovitch Dance Company, at the Municipal Theatre in Angers, France on December 12th 1985 on dancers Sylvain Lafortune and Edward Hillyer. On Thursday April 30th Brooklyn North High Schools (BKNHS) held an Arts Professional Development Day at the New York City College of Technology. The day of networking, pedagogy, workshops and performance was the third of a four-part series moderated by Superintendent Dr. Russell White and conducted by members of the Jamel Gaines Dance Company (JGDC) and Artistic Director Jamel Gaines. One of the highlights was a dance performance by JGDC (yes, a 5-6-7-8 at 9am). The enthusiastic audience of educators were treated to a sneak preview of Pressure a work-in-progress by choreographer Christopher Huggins. Continue reading

The Dance Theatre of Harlem (DTH) presented their New York City season April 16th thru 19th at New York City Center. The company offered new DTH favorites by William Forsythe, and Jodie Gates, and Artistic Director Robert Garland, and the much-anticipated revival of the iconic story ballet Firebird. The overwhelming response recalls the nostalgic revival of Dougla. It seems the public is clamoring for more from the Arthur Mitchell era. Continue reading

Chicago (2002) the musical comedy-drama film adapted from the satirical stage Bob Fosse musical of the same name. Both the movie and the stage play explore themes of celebrity, scandal, and corruption in Jazz Age Chicago. The film stars Renee Zellweger, Richard Gere and Catherine Zeta-Jones and also features Queen Latifah, John C. Dance Theatre of Harlem’s iconic Firebird places the Russian folk tale about a magical bird that triumphs over evil in an exotic Caribbean setting. John Taras’ choreography to Stravinsky’s familiar score was further enlivened by sets and costumes by Geoffrey Holder. The 1982 DTH production was a tremendous worldwide success. Continue reading

To celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Martha Graham Dance Company, April 8 through April 12 at the New York City Center, O&A NYC Magazine reposts Martha Graham’s Appalachian Spring.

Appalachian Spring premiered on October 30th, 1944, at the Library of Congress, Coolidge Auditorium in Washington DC, with Martha Graham dancing the lead role. Created during the darkest days of War World II Graham wanted to create inspiring art that came out of the American experience.  Graham spoke of the work, “To be great art… it must belong to the country in which it flourishes, not be a pale copy of some art form perfected by another culture and another people”. The Hubbard Street Dance Chicago is presenting their New York City season from March 17th until Easter Sunday April 5th. The two-week season will offer two eclectic programs featuring a total of six works. The March season also marks the fifth anniversary of Artistic Director Linda-Denise Fisher-Harrell historic tenure. Her 2021 appointment broke many glass ceilings as the first alumna, woman, and person of color to lead the organization. Continue reading
